Why Try ACT? Mountain path drawing

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can improve your mental health.

ACT

ACT is based on an important truth – that pain, loss, grief, disappointment, fear, and anxiety are part of life.

Yet with the right skills and strategies, we can let go of internal struggles, build and strengthen our resilience, and take effective actions based on what is important to us.

ACT

  • Has proven effective through hundreds of research studies
  • Helps develop psychological flexibility to pursue valued goals even when
it’s challenging due to distress, illness, injury, pain or other difficult situations
  • Works well for any human being who wants to learn how to engage in life
more meaningfully by becoming aware of patterns and habits that hold
 them back
  • Is a psychological treatment approach you can use throughout your life
  • Is more than a therapy – it’s a framework for living well

Dr. Lilian Dindo’s Research Studies on Acceptance and Commitment Training

Based on the concepts of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Dr. Lilian Dindo holds one-day Acceptance and Commitment Training workshops to help people learn new ways to cope with their difficulties and improve their quality of life. The ACT one-day mental health training model is well-suited to the needs and schedules of many people.

Dr. Dindo and her team conduct research as these group therapy workshops take place, contributing to knowledge about what works and is helpful to build resilience. This research includes clinical trials and randomized controlled trials related to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and particularly the one-day ACT training format.

There are opportunities to participate in this ACT research, which is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Research Focus

  1. Developing innovative and pragmatic psychotherapeutic interventions to improve the mental health and functioning of people with health difficulties – with a particular focus on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as the treatment approach
  2. Identifying the psychological mechanisms of action in effective treatments
  3. Evaluating the effectiveness of the one-day training workshop model

A One-Day ACT Training Workshop Approach Has Advantages

The traditional treatment delivery model of psychotherapy – weekly sessions for several months at a clinic or office – does not work for many people.

A one-day Acceptance & Commitment Training workshop approach has several advantages:

  • A training workshop including peers, rather than an individual format with a therapist, may be more comfortable for people new to mental health care
  • Workshops are more easily held in community settings as compared to therapy
  • With a 6-hour one-day ACT workshop, a good deal of treatment is sure to be completed, as compared to people having to make sure to attend multiple, separate sessions
  • A one-day workshop in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy can be especially helpful for people in rural areas, or those with other barriers to care (e.g., transportation, travel distance, childcare, work hours)
One analysis of 125 studies found that nearly 40% of people stop their psychotherapy treatment after the first or second visit–which means they are not getting the full dose or treatment. A concentrated one-day workshop may provide a solution.
